Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme in Outline
For anyone between 18 and 30 who is free of dependent children the Tier 5 (Youth Mobility Scheme) visa offer the means to live, work and travel in the UK for a period of two years. The scheme is however limited to those who already hold British overseas citizenship or who are citizens of British overseas territories. Additionally, anyone from the following list of countries is entitled to apply for a Tier 5 visa: Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Republic of Korea and Taiwan, although in the last three cases a sponsor must be arranged. In other cases the applicant’s own government is the sponsor.
Experiencing British Life
The youth mobility scheme replaced the UK Working Holiday Visa in November 2008, and is founded on the principle that the individuals who take advantage of the scheme stand to benefit by experiencing British life and culture whilst at a formative period in their lives. It also offers those people the opportunity to add to the UK’s domestic workforce. Applicants are expected to leave the UK at the end of the visa’s two year term, if not before. It is important to note from the outset that there is no scope to extend the visa beyond its two year term, and nor is it possible to switch to another category of visa.
Post Study Possibility
As this review from the University of Surrey shows, the Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme is a popular option for students who have reached the end of their period of study, but who are keen to extend their stay in the UK. Surrey is by no means the only university to point to the viability of the YMS in this regard.
As with other categories of visa, the UK referendum decision to leave the EU on June 23rd 2016 may have a bearing on the long term operation of the Youth Mobility Scheme, however, no immediate changes are anticipated.
