Same day Visa application positives and negatives
For anyone in a hurry, it is possible to apply for a “Same Day Visa”. In principle, the great advantage of this is that an applicant can complete the entire visa application process in a single day rather than have it drag out over what may be – in some cases – a period of weeks. There is a trial Government website that is intended to make the timescales for different classes of visa a matter readily accessible to the public.
However, such a fast-track service, for all its evident appeal, does come at a cost. There is an additional £500 charge levied against applications on this basis over and above the specific charges that apply to each visa category. The additional charge does not apply to those applying for an EEA registration certificate, or Croatian nationals applying to work in the UK. Furthermore, application hearings can only be dealt with on an appointment basis. It is not possible to simply turn up and apply. Needless to say, there may be a waiting list for appointments.
Applying in person
An additional issue with applying for the Same Day Visa is that the application must be made in person. Furthermore, it can only be made at a Home Office Public Enquiry Office (PEO). In purely practical terms this means that applicants must be prepared to spend the entire day at such an office. There are currently seven Public Enquiry Offices. These are in Belfast, Cardiff, Croydon, Glasgow, Liverpool, Sheffield and Solihull. Details of PEO addresses and opening hours are available here.
The danger with a same day visa application is that if an applicant’s paperwork is not in perfect order, their application will be rejected on the spot. Needless to say, as much care and attention is required for a same day visa application as in any other case.
